At the beginning of my second and final year as an ECE student at TRU, I got hired to be a resident advisor at East Village, one of TRU’s student housing. I have always wanted to become an RA ever since I moved into residence and it was because the girl who was my RA when I first moved in(who is now my co-worker), really inspired me with how kind and caring she was towards me even though she had never knew me before then. She would come to my house to check up on me, see how my day went, and send emails with more information regarding questions and concerns I had. I was fascinated by how that was someone’s job and could only imagined how rewarding it must be to be able to care and help other students just like me to have an awesome resident life. I have since them been waiting for hiring to begin for me to apply for the job.
Just as I had imagined, being an RA was very rewarding. I did not only meet and talk to new people, but I become the person they can count on and trust to look out for them, to check up on them, and listen to them when they need someone to talk to. I think that because I have met and learned to interact with people from various parts of the world, it was very easy for me to connect with my residents even though many of them were from cultures very different from mine. This job brought me joy and satisfaction to know that someone feels a bit less alone, anxious, or helpless because I was able to add a little positive effect on their day.
